Donald Trump has ‘repeatedly expressed interest’ in buying Greenland for the U.S.

United States President Donald Trump is interested in buying Greenland for the US, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Mr Trump had repeatedly expressed interest in buying Greenland, according to people familiar with the deliberations.

Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark, however, Mr Trump listened to his advisers with interest when told of its abundant resources and geopolitical importance.

The US military’s northernmost base is also there.

According to two people familiar with the deliberations, he asked his White House counsel to look into the idea.

Former US President Harry Truman attempted to buy Greenland for $US100 million in gold in 1946, but Denmark refused.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Mr Trump wants to acquire Greenland as officials see it as important to American national-security interests and the US has previously sought to derail Chinese economic footholds there.

Others saw the lighter side.
