US and Germany accused of meddling in Russian politics
The Russian Foreign Ministry will submit official notifications to Washington and Berlin over alleged interference of American diplomats and German media in domestic affairs, the Russian news agency TASS reports.
Russia claims the United States Embassy was involved in planning unauthorised rallies held in Moscow on 3 August.
“[T]he embassy of the United States was most closely involved in [the rallies],” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in a televised interview with the Rossiya’1 channel on Sunday (local time). “The US embassy in Moscow had published a route of that so-called stroll planned for Saturday. Item by item, minute by minute was the itinerary set out: what time it starts, what time it ends and so on and so forth.”
The Foreign Ministry will submit its evidence to the US Government.
“Unconditionally, we will officially submit all the files to the US embassy in Moscow, and not just to the embassy. I think that the US leadership will be much surprised at how their diplomats meddle with Russian internal affairs,” Ms Zakharova said.
Certain European media outlets have also been accused of attempting to interfere in Russia’s domestic affairs, notably Germany’s Deutsche Welle news channel.
“Regrettably, we will have to notify the German side – moreover, the channel is state-funded – of our concerns and the practical steps we are going to take,” Ms Zakharova concluded.
According to the Moscow police press service, the police and National Guard detained about 600 people for participating in a 1,500-strong unauthorised rally on Saturday.
Police cautioned that provocations were highly likely at the rally and urged both Muscovites and visitors to refrain from participating in it.
