Blade Runner star Rutger Hauer dies aged 75
Dutch actor Rutger Hauer, best known for portraying Roy Batty in Blade Runner, passed away at his home in the Netherlands last Friday, aged 75.
Mr Hauer starred alongside Harrison Ford as the replicant Roy Batty in Ridley’s Scott’s 1982 sci-fi classic Blade Runner in which the actor himself wrote much of the dialogue for his “like tears in rain” speech.
He was cast in a number of Dutch television programmes and films from the late 1960s onward, and gained Hollywood’s attention for playing terrorist Heymar Reinhardt in the 1981 Sylvester Stalone film Nighthawks.
After Blade Runner he starred in the 1986 American horror film The Hitcher, and also appeared in a series of commercials for Guinness beer during the 1990s.
Director Guillermo del Toro described Mr Hauer as “an intense, deep, genuine and magnetic actor that brought truth, power and beauty to his films.”
