Australian Christian Lobby donates $100k to Israel Folau, launches fundraiser
The Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) has launched a new fundraising campaign for Israel Folau on their own website after GoFundMe removed the controversial rugby player’s fundraising page.
The ACL made an initial $100,000 donation to the new fundraiser, which has already raised over $400,000.
“There is an outpouring of support for Israel Folau from the Australian community, who see Israel’s case as their case,” said ACL Managing Director Martyn Iles.
Regarding the $100,000 donation for Mr Folau’s legal defence, on their fundraising page Mr Iles claimed “it’s right and it sets an important legal precedent.”
Mr Folau initially set up the GoFundMe page to raise $3,000,000 for his legal fight against Rugby Australia after the sports body officially terminated his contract on 21 May this year.
The termination followed a post made by Mr Folau containing a biblical message, which said hell awaits “Drunks, Homosexuals, Adulterers, Liars, Fornicators, Thieves, Atheists, Idolaters.”

GoFundMe shut down Mr Folau’s fundraising page on 24 June because it violated the fundraising site’s terms of service.
Nicola Britton, the Regional Manager of GoFundMe, said: “As a company, we are absolutely committed to the fight for equality for LGBTIQ+ people and fostering an environment of inclusivity.”
She added that GoFundMe does “not tolerate the promotion of discrimination or exclusion.”
