Commonwealth Games: Chairman says ‘we got it wrong’ about closing ceremony
Gold Coast Commonwealth Games Chairman Peter Beattie has said that “we got it wrong” after the closing ceremony barely focused on athletes and instead featured long speeches by dignitaries.
Many patrons began to leave the event only one hour into the ceremony after athletes entered the stadium, only to stand on the fringes of the stage in darkness.
The ceremony included several speeches, including one from Mr Beattie which many viewers say took the focus off of the athletes.
The Commonwealth Games Chairman told the Nine Network on Monday: “Having them come into the stadium in the pre-show meant that the TV audience was not able to see the athletes enter the stadium, alongside flag-bearers. We got that wrong.”
Channel 7 hosts Joanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas expressed their disappointment on live air after the ceremony.
Ms Griggs said that she was “furious” and that a conscious decision was made not to place the athletes in the spotlight after eleven days of competition.
